GhostBSD 10.3 BETA1 is ready for testing

This first BETA development release is ready for testing and debugging new feature in GhostBSD 10.3, MATE and XFCE is available on SourceForge for the i386, amd64, and amd64-uefi architectures.

OPNsense 16.1.17 released

Today we offer complementary improvements and fixes to your swinging installation in the hopes that they will make your daily experience even better, rounded off with a pinch of SSL crypto updates.
In other news, we are getting ready for a first 16.7 release candidate after having finished the full work on the FreeBSD 10.3 base system including the addition of HardenedBSD’s ASLR. More on this next week.

pfSense 2.3.1 Update 5 Available

2.3.1 Update 5 (2.3.1_5) is now available. Note that updates 2 through 4 were internal-only. This includes two security fixes to the web GUI, and 7 other bug fixes. The 2.3.1-RELEASE change list has been updated with an Update 5 section specifying the changes.
This update will reboot the system after installing.

This afternoon, Bert JW Regeer wished that FreshPorts “would show information from the quarterly branches too…”. I knew I had done some work on this and that there was a way to display branch information. I check the source code and found the ?branch= parameter, but there was nothing in the database for this branch. [...]

SmallWall 1.8.4b9 beta release

Just released a new beta with a MUCH newer version of SNMP. Now supports v2 and 64bit counters for network monitoring. Also may have fixed some memory and CPU monitoring bugs from a long way back.

Raspberry Pi gains new FreeBSD distribution

Raspberry Pi owners can dig out their SD-card formatting tools of choice again, because a new version of FreeBSD has emerged for the machines,
RaspBSD will work on the Pi models B and B+ and promises to run on more “soon”. The “more” looks like including the BeagleBone Black and the Banana Pi.
FreeBSD has been available on the Pi for some time, as recorded in this post by the Pi foundation. This cut of the OS is the work of FreeBSD contributor and forum administrator Brad Davis, who says “The Goal of this project is to build images easily useable by anyone. Sometimes that means images preloaded with different packages to help new users get started.”
“Initially they will start off pretty basic, but will expand in different directions to support different goals. Initial goals include Education and Entertainment. All of our images are built using publicly available tools and any enhancements will be pushed upstream.”

OpenBSD 5.8 Preorders Enabled, Release Song Published

Two important events of the OpenBSD 5.8 release cycle happened today:
  • On the Orders page, pre-orders for the new release have been enabled
  • On the Lyrics page, the OpenBSD 5.8 release song has been published, with links to OGG and MP3 formats available.
The release date is October 18th, to mark the 20th anniversary of creation the OpenBSD CVS tree, as Theo de Raadt (deraadt@) noted in the announcement:

The GhostBSD team is pleased to announce the availability the fist RC build of the 4.0-RELEASE release cycle which is available on SourceForge for the amd64 and i386 architectures.

FreeNAS 9.2.1.7 Now Available

  •    Increase performance of Directory Copy from CIFS

  •    Resolve issue with vlan interface locking that could cause a kernel panic when creating a number of VLAN interfaces.
  •    Add support for compressing replication jobs with lz4

This version forward-ports security fixes from OpenSSL 1.0.1i, including fixes for the following CVEs: CVE-2014-3506 CVE-2014-3507 CVE-2014-3508 (partially vulnerable) CVE-2014-3509 CVE-2014-3510 CVE-2014-3511 LibreSSL 2.0.4 was not found vulnerable to the following CVEs: CVE-2014-5139 CVE-2014-3512 CVE-2014-3505 We welcome feedback and support from the community as we continue to work on LibreSSL.

FreeBSD 9.3-RELEASE Now Available 

The FreeBSD Release Engineering Team is pleased to announce the availability of FreeBSD 9.3-RELEASE. This is the fourth release of the stable/9 branch, which improves on the stability of FreeBSD 9.2-RELEASE and introduces some new features.

Some of the highlights:
  • The zfs(8) filesystem has been updated to support the bookmarks feature.
  • The uname(1) utility has been updated to include the -U and -K flags, which print the __FreeBSD_version for the running userland and kernel, respectively.
  • The fetch(3) library has been updated to support SNI (Server Name Identification), allowing to use virtual hosts on HTTPS.
  • Several updates to gcc(1) have been imported from Google.
  • The hastctl(8) utility has been updated to output the current queue sizes.
  • The protect(1) command has been added, which allows exempting processes from being killed when swap is exhausted.
  • The etcupdate(8) utility, a tool for managing updates to files in /etc, has been merged from head/.
  • A new shared library directory, /usr/lib/private, has been added for internal-use shared libraries.
  • OpenPAM has been updated to Nummularia (20130907).
  • A new flag, "onifconsole" has been added to /etc/ttys. This allows the system to provide a login prompt via serial console if the device is an active kernel console, otherwise it is equivalent to off.
  • Sendmail has been updated to version 8.14.9.
  • BIND has been updated to version 9.9.5.
  • The xz(1) utility has been updated to a post-5.0.5 snapshot.
  • OpenSSH has been updated to version 6.6p1.
  • OpenSSL has been updated to version 0.9.8za.
GhostBSD 4.0 BETA 3 now available

The GhostBSD team is pleased to announce the availability the third BETA build of the 4.0-RELEASE release cycle is available on SourceForge for the amd64 and i386 architectures. This is expected to be the final BETA build of the 4.0-RELEASE cycle.
This release includes some bug fixes as well as new and updated packages. This release also includes the changes from direction GhostBSD is taking, Three workstation that is build a top of MATE desktop Classic, Purity, Element. We hope that you will enjoy this change!

FreeBSD 9.2 EoL pushed back 

After the recent reminder about the upcoming EoL for FreeBSD 9.2, many
of you have expressed concerns over the fact that support for 9.2 would
end before 9.1, and over the short time available to upgrade from 9.2 to
9.3. As a result of your feedback, we have decided to postpone the EoL
date for 9.2 to December 31, 2014.
Note that due to technical limitations, freebsd-update(8) will continue
to warn about the approaching EoL for 9.2 until the next errata notice
or security advisory is published.

DragonFly powerd: go full speed if killed 

Matthew Dillon changed powerd on DragonFly so that the system is set to max performance if powerd is killed.  Now you’ll know why your fans turned on!

Security Advisory: NetBSD-SA2014-007 bozohttpd basic http authentication bypass 

When checking for restricted access via .htpasswd files, bozohttpd fails to properly check for truncation, allowing specially crafted requests to bypass access control without a password.  Files of length 10 or more are not affected.

FreeBSD Foundation Accepting Travel Grant Applications (EuroBSDCon 2014) 

For FreeBSD developers interested in attending EuroBSDCon 2014, the FreeBSD Foundation is currently taking applications for travel grants. The FreeBSD Foundation will be providing a limited number of travel grants to individuals requesting assistance. 

EuroBSDCon 2014 Registrations Open 

Registration for the EuroBSDCon 2014 is now officially opened.
This year's conference is in Sofia, Bulgaria, and the important dates are:
  • 25-26 September Thursday & Friday - Tutorials
  • 27-28 September Saturday & Sunday - Main conference
  • 27 September Saturday evening - Social event
As you can see from the program, OpenBSD is fairly well represented (generally one talk in each of three parallel tracks, plus tutorials). Sign up now for early bird rates!

Some drivers gone for x86_64 DragonFly  

Sascha Wildner has removed some drivers in the x86_64 config.  This will only really affect you if you use a custom kernel and still have entries for those drivers in the config file.

 Releases

FreeBSD 9.3-BETA1 Now Available

The first BETA build of the 9.3-RELEASE release cycle is now available on the FTP servers for the amd64, i386, ia64, powerpc, powerpc64 and sparc64 architectures.

The image checksums can be found in the PGP-signed announcement email.

ISO images and, for architectures that support it, the memory stick images are available here:
http://ftp.freebsd.org/pub/FreeBSD/releases/ISO-IMAGES/9.3/


JabirOS 2.0.1 has been released   

JabirOS 2.0-RELEASE needed some little corrections in bsdinstall program and some other scripts. We have edited codebase, and now, JabirOS 2.0.1 is here. 


DragonFly 3.8 released

The 3.8 release of DragonFly is out!  See the release page for a changelog and check your local mirror for download first.
Binary dports packages for 3.8 have been built; they are available for download.  (link goes to release versions of the packages.  Future updates will be in ../LATEST)

PC-BSD 10.0.2-PRERELEASE ISO Available for Testing

The next 10.0.2-PRERELEASE ISO is now available for testing and can be downloaded from
http://download.pcbsd.org/iso/10.0-RELEASE/testing/amd64/.
If you have a spare system or virtual machine, consider testing this image. If you find any bugs, report them at https://trac.pcbsd.org so we can take a look at fixing them before 10.0.2 is released later this month.

Another BSDCan has come and gone, and for those of you who missed the fun, the OpenBSD presentations are now online:

EuroBSDCon 2014 submissions deadline extended until June 2nd, 2014 

Co-editor and writer of many words about OpenBSD, Peter Hansteen, who is also on the EuroBSDCon 2014 program committe, wrote in to tell us that the deadline for submissions to the EuroBSDCon 2014 conference has been extended until June 2nd 2014.

OpenBSD Webcast on O'Reilly

Michael W. Lucas, author of the books SSH Mastery, Sudo Mastery, DNSSEC Mastery, and Absolute OpenBSD, writes in to let us know that he'll be talking OpenBSD up on the interwebs:
I'll be doing a webcast on O'Reilly's community site called "Beyond Security: OpenBSD's Real Purpose." This will go out live on Tuesday, 27 May, 1PM EDT. I'll take questions at the end.
The talk will focus on OpenBSD as a pressure cooker to change the world. If only I had a really good example of this whole "pressure cooker" idea from, say, the last month or so, then the talk would feel really current and attract a lot of interest from the outside world.
