Lumina 1.0.0 sources frozen

The source tree for the Lumina desktop has just been soft-frozen in preparation for the upcoming release of version 1.0.0 in mid-August (tentatively targeting August 8th for final reviews/checks).
This means that all interface elements (GUI’s, widgets, etc) as well as any text which requires translation may no longer be changed without approval from both Ken Moore and the documentation team (basically only things like bug fixes or spelling errors).
This is now the time to go through and perform any translations of the Lumina desktop in preparation for the release. You can see the current translation progress and help perform translations on the PC-BSD translations website.
We have also created a new tarball of the Lumina source tree on github (v1.0.0-Beta2) so that package distributors have time to audit their current build systems and ensure that the Lumina files/binaries are being packaged properly (please report any packaging issues ASAP so that we can adjust things as necessary). This is very important as a few binary names and install locations for files have changed, and some optional dependencies have changed as well (“compton” may be used instead of “xcompmgr” for example).

A single function for creating a new port

In my two previous posts I talked about creating a new port and copying a port from head to a branch. The goal of this post is the creation of a new function: CreatePortOnBranch($category_name, $port_name, $CommitBranch) The failed start I started out with this stored procedure: Running it gave this message: # select CreatePort('sysutils', 'bacula-server', [...]

LibreSSL Package Repo

We are pleased to announce the availability of the LibreSSL package repo for 11-CURRENT/amd64. This repo is based off of the LibreSSL-in-base branch (hardened/current/master-libressl) that Bernard Spil has been working on. Going forward, along with providing binary updates for that branch via hbsd-update(8), we will also provide binary packages. We will also provide binary packages soon for the LibreSSL 10-STABLE branch (hardened/10-stable/master-libressl). Having both the feature branches along with package repos will allow us to investigate making LibreSSL the standard in HardenedBSD.
We would like to thank Bernard Spil for his continuous hard work. We're glad to have him on the team. Thanks to him, HardenedBSD is the first downstream FreeBSD project to have both LibreSSL in base along with a package repo that matches.

CfP extended for EuroBSDCon 2015

Due to overwhelming response, the deadline for submitting talks to EuroBSDCon has been extended:
Since there was a huge rush of submissions just on the very last day, we have decided to give a second chance for all of you that didn’t quite finish your talk or tutorial proposal in time for the deadline.
The new date is set to May 22nd, but you don’t have to wait until the very last moment. Send in your suggestions right away. We think there still is room for some more topics related to *BSD left to present.
For those of you who already have sent in yours, we are very happy to see so many good submissions. Don’t hesitate to add another topic to your submissions if you haven’t run out of good ideas yet.
If you've been sitting on that paper, now's the time to ship it!

PC-BSD and 4K — Oh my!

I had recently seen some chatter on IRC about 4K monitor support. One of the people discussing stated that PC-BSD didn’t support 4K monitors, which was curious to me, since I hadn’t tried it yet. This week I did something about that, and ended up getting two 4K monitors and a new video card (With triple DisplayPort) to do some testing.

The Book of PF 3rd ed Is Out, Win First Signed Copy by Donating to OpenBSD!

As you may have heard elsewhere, The Book of PF is out in its third edition. Now author Peter Hansteen has received his author copies, and he has teamed up with the OpenBSD Foundation to auction off the first ever signed copy of the book.

More details are to be found over at Peter's blog, but the main item is that the first physical copy of the new edition ever touched by and subsequently signed by its author is up on an ebay auction where all proceeds will go to the OpenBSD Foundation. For unsuccessful bidders, Peter urges them to donate the amount of their highest bid to the OpenBSD Foundation.

  • Fix bug where use of NONE cipher in replication erroneously reported an error on a successful replication.
  • Don’t enable lz4 compression on replication by default if upgrading from a pre-9.2.1.7 release.
  • Multiple kernel iSCSI / CTL improvements. This includes VMWare VAAI and Microsoft ODX acceleration support, improved performance and fixes for number of bugs. Kernel iSCSI can be activated by checking the experimental target checkbox under services -> iSCSI.

FreeBSD 9.2 EoL pushed back

After the recent reminder about the upcoming EoL for FreeBSD 9.2, many
of you have expressed concerns over the fact that support for 9.2 would
end before 9.1, and over the short time available to upgrade from 9.2 to
9.3. As a result of your feedback, we have decided to postpone the EoL
date for 9.2 to December 31, 2014.

Note that due to technical limitations, freebsd-update(8) will continue
to warn about the approaching EoL for 9.2 until the next errata notice
or security advisory is published.

Security Advisory: NetBSD-SA2014-007 bozohttpd basic http authentication bypass

When checking for restricted access via .htpasswd files, bozohttpd fails to properly check for truncation, allowing specially crafted requests to bypass access control without a password.  Files of length 10 or more are not affected.

For FreeBSD developers interested in attending EuroBSDCon 2014, the FreeBSD Foundation is currently taking applications for travel grants. The FreeBSD Foundation will be providing a limited number of travel grants to individuals requesting assistance.

DNS improvements in FreeBSD 11

Erwin Lansing just posted a summary of the DNS session at the FreeBSD DevSummit that was held in conjunction with BSDCan 2014 in May. It gives a good overview of the current state of affairs, including known bugs and plans for the future.
