FreeBSD 8.4-RC1 Now Available
The first RC build of the 8.4-RELEASE release cycle is now available on the FTP servers for the amd64, i386, and pc98 architectures. The SHA256/MD5 sums are tacked on to the bottom of this message. The ISO images and, for architectures that support it, the memory stick images are available here: ftp://ftp.freebsd.org/pub/FreeBSD/releases/ISO-IMAGES/8.4/
The FreeBSD - Google's 2013 Summer of Code program
The FreeBSD Project is pleased to announce its participation In Google's 2013 Summer of Code program, which funds summer students to participate in open source projects. This will be the FreeBSD Project's ninth year in the program, having mentored over 150 successful students through summer-long coding projects between 2005 and 2012.
Past successful projects have included improvements to Linux ABI emulation, NFSv4 ACLs, TCP regression testing, FUSE file system support, and countless other projects. Many students go on to become FreeBSD developers, as well as participating in FreeBSD developer events around the world through continuing support from the FreeBSD Foundation.
Prospective participants are invited to apply; more information is available, including proposal and deadline information, on the FreeBSD Summer Projects page.
DragonFlyBSD: Google Summer of Code: students, apply!
Now’s the time to put in your application for Summer of Code projects, if you’re a student. The application period runs until May 3rd. There’s already been some proposals on the mailing lists; now they can be put in officially.
PC-BSD Repo Switches to Github
Last week, Kris announced on the developers mailing list that the PC-BSD source repo has switched from subversion to github.
For those of you who like to compile new features in order to test them before they are incorporated into a release or a rolling release, the instructions for getting source have been updated. Any references to svn in the wiki version of the Handbook will also be switched to the git equivalent. If you have installed subversion before from System Manager -> System Packages -> Development -> Development VCS, you already have git as it is included in that meta-package.
PC-BSD announces pkgng Package Repository for PC-BSD and FreeBSD 9.1
The PC-BSD Project is pleased to announce the details on how to access their new PKGNG repository, for PC-BSD and FreeBSD 9.1-Release systems.
This package repository is frequently updated, usually bi-weekly, with the latest and greatest from the FreeBSD ports tree. We will be using this repository for the PC-BSD rolling release edition, but it can also be used anywhere else you need packages on a PC-BSD or FreeBSD 9.1-RELEASE system. This can include FreeBSD, TrueOS, PC-BSD, Jails and more. Getting setup to use this new repository is easy, and only requires minimal configuration.
