The FreeBSD Foundation Is Soliciting Project Proposals

"Following a successful 2012 fundraising campaign, the FreeBSD Foundation is soliciting the submission of project proposals for funded development grants. Proposals may be related to any of the major subsystems or infrastructure within the FreeBSD operating system, and will be evaluated based on desirability, technical merit, and cost-effectiveness. The proposal process is open to all developers (including non-FreeBSD committers), and the deadline for submitting a proposal is April 26th, 2013."

PC-BSD Announces Package Repository for PC-BSD and FreeBSD 9.1

The PC-BSD Project is pleased to announce the details on how to access their new PKGNG repository, for PC-BSD and FreeBSD 9.1-Release systems.
This package repository is frequently updated, usually bi-weekly, with the latest and greatest from the FreeBSD ports tree. We will be using this repository for the PC-BSD rolling release edition, but it can also be used anywhere else you need packages on a PC-BSD or FreeBSD 9.1-RELEASE system. This can include FreeBSD, TrueOS, PC-BSD, Jails and more. Getting setup to use this new repository is easy, and only requires minimal configuration. dports > 19500, fail logs available

The number of ports that build on DragonFly is greater than 19,500 as of  today.  Since the dports project started 4 months ago, around 100 ports  no longer build due to changes in the base system (like flex update) or  ports themselves (e.g. glib2 update).  These ports will eventually be  fixed or removed.

OpenBSD 5.3 pre-order ! 

OpenBSD 5.3 pre orders are now available you can buy some stuffs like T-shirts, mugs, install CD. It is a nice way to support the project !

• OpenSMTP 5.3 (now suitable as production use !)
• Little I/O improvement by changing the I/O sort algorithm

BSDCan 2013 and EuroBSDCon 2013

BSDCan 2013 will take place from 15 – 18 May in Ottaway (Ca), and you  may register now.
EuroBSDCon 2013 will this year be held on the Island of Malta (26-29 September). The usual  Call for Papers has gone out.

DragonFly BSD 3.4 in testing

DragonFly BSD 3.4 has now a branch on the git repository, it's meant to be tested before the release.
Here is a short list of new features:

• Support for intel AVX instructions
• Enhancement of vKernel
• Choice beetween dPorts (FreeBSD ports on dragonfly) or pkgsrc at install time
• usb4bsd support
• Lot of HAMMER work
• OpenSSH 6.1p1
• Packet Filter SMP aware (need confirmation)
• Memory allocation routine changed to improve performance (particularly in HIMENO benchmark)
• WIFI support improved
