NetBSD 5.2.1 and NetBSD 5.1.3 patch releases

The NetBSD Project is pleased to announce NetBSD 5.2.1, the first security/bugfix update of the NetBSD 5.2 release branch, and NetBSD 5.1.3, the third security/bugfix update of the NetBSD 5.1 release branch. They represent a selected subset of fixes deemed important for security or stability reasons, and if you are running a release of NetBSD prior to 5.1.3, you are recommended to update to a supported NetBSD 5.x or NetBSD 6.x version.

NetBSD 6.1.2 and NetBSD 6.0.3 are out! 

The NetBSD Project is pleased to announce NetBSD 6.1.2, the second security/bugfix update of the NetBSD 6.1 release branch, and NetBSD 6.0.3, the third security/bugfix update of the NetBSD 6.0 release branch. They represent a selected subset of fixes deemed important for security or stability reasons, and if you are running a prior release of NetBSD 6.x3, you are recommended to update.

FreeBSD 10.0-ALPHA4 Available



The fourth ALPHA build for the FreeBSD-10.0 release cycle is now available. ISO images for the amd64, i386, ia64, powerpc, powerpc64 and sparc64 architectures are available on most of our FreeBSD mirror sites.

DragonFly BSD: Summer of Code projects getting committed

Matthew Dillon’s committed the work by Daniel Flores on Hammer 2 compression and Mihai Carabas’s vkernel hardware support - both Summer of Code projects.  There’s a good amount of detail in the commit messages describing the work and what it changed; I expect more Summer of Code work to be getting committed…
Note: you’ll want to do a full update.


DragonFly BSD: Radeon and KMS branch to try

Francois Tigeot posted his work on the KMS driver for Radeon video cards.  He’s looking for help since he’s low on time for the immediate future, and this is a project that could benefit everyone.

FreeBSD: CFT: Ports Now Have Stack Protector Support

Bryan Drewery recently announced a call for testing as FreeBSD Ports now support enabling Stack Protector on FreeBSD 10 i386 and amd64. Currently, on older releases, only amd64 is supported, though support may be added for earlier i386 releases once all ports properly respect LDFLAGS.

To enable this support,  add WITH_SSP=yes to make.conf and rebuild all installed ports. The default SSP_CLFAGS is -fstack-protector, but -fstack-protector-all may optionally be set instead.

Testers are needed to help identify any major ports that have run-time issues. The plan is to eventually enable support by default. If you find any problematic ports, you can assist by submitting a problem report. 


FreeBSD 20 Year Anniversary Party

Matt Olander has announced a 20th Anniversary party to be held in San Francisco on Saturday, November 2nd:

20 years ago, Nate Williams, Rod Grimes, and Jordan Hubbard came together to turn their 386BSD patchkit into something greater. David Greenman gave their combined efforts a name.
