PC-BSD 10.0.1 released

The first PC-BSD 10.0 quarterly update has come out, and 10.0.1 is now available. This update includes a number of important bugfixes, as well as newer packages and desktops, such as KDE 4.12.2, Cinnamon 2.0 and more. For more details and updating instructions, refer to the PC-BSD 10.0.1 release notes.

JabirBSD going back to linux

The new JabirOS will be based on Xubuntu (LTS only) and first version will be based on 12.04.4. This new project aims an easy-to-install and an easy-to-use Desktop operating system.

New USB on by default   

DragonFly has moved from the old USB stack to USB4BSD by default.  That means:

• If you are already using USB4BSD, you will want to remove WANT_USB4BSD from your kernel config.
• If you have trouble, switch back to the old USB.
• There’s some drivers that are not yet converted; help with them would be appreciated.  
• A full kernel/world build and ‘make upgrade’ will be needed in either case.

Sascha Wildner’s announcement email has all the gory details, including the kernel config changes to move back to the old USB setup.  This is of course in master; 3.6 users are unaffected.

USB 3.0 support beginning to emerge for -current

USB 3.0 support is coming to OpenBSD-current. In a series of commits commit dated March 8 2014 ending with this one, Martin Pieuchot (mpi@) added the beginnings of USB 3.0 support

FreeBSD Foundation Accepting Travel Grant Applications for BSDCan 2014

Calling all FreeBSD developers needing assistance with travel expenses to BSDCan 2014.

The FreeBSD Foundation will be providing a limited number of travel grants to individuals requesting assistance. Please fill out and submit  the Travel Grant Request Application by April 7th, 2014 to apply for this grant.

This program is open to FreeBSD developers of all sorts (kernel hackers, documentation authors, bugbusters, system administrators, etc).  In some  cases we are also able to fund non-developers, such as active community members and FreeBSD advocates. More details are available in the announcement.

OpenSMTPd Now the Default MTA in OpenBSD 

After a long time spent in the shadow of Sendmail, OpenSMTPd is now the default MTA in OpenBSD:
